Argentine midfielder Julio Arca is leaving Middlesbrough but could still yet be playing in England next season.

The 32-year-old was the longest-serving player at the club but recently had his contract cancelled by mutual consent after spending seven years at the Riverside.

Arca has been plagued by injury this season and only lately tried an unsuccessful return to training following a toe problem. He previously completed approaching a double-century of appearances for the club.

“The idea is to carry on playing,” he told the Northern Echo. “The idea is to go back home in the summer over the next couple of weeks and see if I can get this problem sorted.

“It might take three or four months to fix, but if I can get sorted the idea is to come back to England and try to look for a club here and I’ll see if I can carry on playing for two or three years,” he added. “If it doesn’t happen here then I might have to go abroad somewhere else, but the idea is to come back.”
