Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray insists midfielder Nicky Bailey still has a big part to play at the Riverside.

The 28-year-old was a regular last season but has found himself used only occassionally this time around.

Bailey was hoping for a return to the side against Huddersfield Town this evening as Grant Leadbitter is suspended. But he faces plenty of competition from the likes of Richard Smallwood and Kevin Thomson.

“Nicky Bailey is very much part of our squad. He’s probably not a stick-on in the team now,” Mowbray told the Evening Gazette. “Josh McEachran has come in and brought a different dimension to our team.

“Nicky understands that, we had a conversation at the start of the season and I told him about the competition for places,” he continued. “He needs to get on with it and when he plays he has to perform at the level we know he can.”
