Middlesbrough twice came from behind to earn themselves a point at Barnsley after goals from Martin Braithwaite and Britt Assombalonga.

A frantic start to the game witnessed three changes of scoreline inside ten minutes, with Ashley Fletcher responsible for an own-goal against his former club and Cameron McGeehan netting on his home debut.

Summer recruit Braithwaite managed to respond in between those and Boro’s record signing Assombalonga later equalised on the hour.

Ex-Barnsley loanee Fletcher had diverted into his own net within three minutes, although Braithwaite’s low drive rapidly levelled after Fletcher helped on Cyrus Christie’s long throw.

However, midfielder McGeehan headed in Brad Potts’ cross to restore the lead just a couple of minutes later.

Potts next struck wide from distance and both Fabio and Fletcher had replying efforts, while Assombalonga was too high from keeper Adam Davies’ misdirected throw.

Midfielder Grant Leadbitter also drilled behind ahead of the interval before Fletcher saw a couple of further attempts after the resumption.

But it was Assombalonga on the end of Stewart Downing’s threaded pass and beating Davies at his near post to crucially equalise.

Barnsley substitute Mamadou Thiam then proved wide of the mark and Harvey Barnes also found the inside of a post, until keeper Darren Randolph was called into action by the former from outside the area.
