Middlesbrough have finally parted company with former skipper Matthew Bates.

The 25-year-old had been training with the club despite being out-of-contract since the end of last season, during which he suffered a fifth cruciate knee injury.

It is believed that Boro did make the Stockton-born defender a subsequent offer which in the end failed to prevent his final departure.

“After discussions with Matthew, all parties agreed that it would be best if he moved on,” Boro chief executive Neil Bausor told the Evening Gazette. “It was an amicable meeting and we wish Matthew all the best for the future. He’s been a great servant for Middlesbrough Football Club.”
