Manager Tony Mowbray reckons his Middlesbrough side are a stronger outfit than last season when only narrowly missing out on the play-offs.

The Teessiders travel to bottom club Peterborough United this weekend hoping to improve on a disappointing recent record of three defeats in their last four games.

However, Mowbray maintains he expects their challenge to be all the greater this time around and believes they have coped particularly well given the significant number of injuries.

“I hope the squad is better equipped than it was last season, and to be honest, I think we’ve already proven that it is,” he told the Northern Echo. “It’s had to be better equipped for us to be where we are now.

“We’ve had a lot of injuries to important players, but generally we’ve coped,” he added. “We’re disappointed with the results over the last few weeks because we had a great chance to push on, but for us to be sitting where we are with everything that’s gone on, I think that proves we have a squad that can cope with whatever is thrown at it.”
