Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray admitted defender Stephen McManus could be set for a surprise recall to the side.

The former Scottish international hasn’t featured since early October but was on the bench for the weekend defeat at Crystal Palace.

He recently returned to the Riverside following a second loan spell at Bristol City, but with fellow central defenders Jonathan Woodgate and Seb Hines currently sidelined could earn himself a shock recall at Burnley tomorrow evening.

“Stephen was at Palace sitting on the bench, so let’s see what happens,” Mowbray told Sky Sports. “If we need Stephen, we’ll have to do what we need to do. Centre-halves have got to play in their position, so if Stephen’s required, he’ll play.”

Boro have lost six of their last seven league games while conceding seventeen goals in the process.
