Middlesbrough are considering offering a deal to former Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead.

The 31-year-old is currently a free agent having made more than 150 appearances for Stoke City after arriving in a £3m deal from the Black Cats four years ago.

Manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed that talks had already taken place involving both parties.

“He’s a player we potentially might have an interest in but he might have some decisions to make,” he told BBC Sport. “He’s been in the Premier League for six or seven years and will have an earning power that reflect that.”

Boro have still to recruit since the end of last season despite being linked with moves for Hungarian midfielder Joszef Varga, Real Madrid striker Javier Acuna and former Manchester United defender Frederic Veseli.

The Teessiders are back in for the start of pre-season training next Monday.
