Boro defender George Friend has been named in the EFL’s latest team of the week.

The 30-year-old came up with a timely second goal of the season as his side clinched a hugely important 2-1 home victory against promotion rivals Bristol City at the weekend.

Fellow defender Daniel Ayala, who was included in their previous team of the week, went on to grab a second-half winner to lift the hosts back into the play-offs with just three games remaining.

“Friend may have got himself on the scoresheet,” said the EFL regarding his choice, “but it was his all-round efforts which earns him a spot, delivering a dominant defensive display in a vital win for Boro.”

Team: Josh Lillis (Rochdale), George Friend (Middlesbrough), Ash Taylor (Northampton), Anthony Kay (Port Vale), Malvind Benning (Mansfield), Junior Hoilett (Cardiff), Luke Murphy (Burton), Dean Parrett (Wimbledon), Jordan Ponticelli (Coventry), Barry Corr (Cambridge), Callum Robinson (Preston)

Manager: Gary Bowyer (Blackpool)
