Middlesbrough’s narrow 1-0 home victory against Blackburn Rovers came on a “big day” in the Championship according to manager Tony Mowbray.

Striker Lukas Jutkiewicz claimed his seventh goal of the season midway through the second-half to leave Boro in third place in the table heading towards the New Year.

“It was a good day for us,” Mowbray admitted to Boro’s official website. “It was important to win with Cardiff playing Palace and Leicester playing Hull, the four teams around us, so someone was going to drop points.

“It was a big day in the Championship today,” he added. “We’ve still got 22 matches to go but we’re on the road down now. Every game now as it comes along is like another step towards what we’re trying to achieve.”

Boro next come up against Blackpool at the Riverside this coming weekend and then visit Derby County on New Year’s Day.
