Middlesbrough hope to sign Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood ahead of the new campaign.

The Teessiders are prepared to trigger a £3m buyout clause to take the 32-year-old to the Riverside, according to the Northern Echo.

Republic of Ireland international Westwood is widely regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers outside the top division and an ideal candidate to replace the departed Victor Valdes and Brad Guzan.

He still has a couple of years remaining on his existing deal having kept sixteen clean-sheets for the South Yorkshire club last season.
