Championship rivals Birmingham City are keen on taking Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing to St Andrew’s.

The 32-year-old former England international was recently made available by the relegated Teessiders.

Blues manager Harry Redknapp also wants to bring in Ashley Cole and Robbie Keane – both of whom have been playing for LA Galaxy in the MLS.

“Stewart Downing is a proper player, got a great left foot, he’s fit as a fiddle,” Redknapp told SkySports. “Whether we could afford him I don’t know.

“Wage-wise I don’t know where we would go with it, I haven’t got a clue what he earns, and he belongs to Middlesbrough,” he added. “But I think they’ve said he can go on a free, so he’s of interest.”

I think blues are placing a bit too much on the short term , in two years time we don’t want to buy half a team all over again . I am all for mixing the right blend of experience with the urgency of youth but we must not put all our eggs in one old basket ,in case the bottom falls out ,…Bakkali on the wing , Claudius Kaseru up front

I think we have only paid a fee for one player this window. And he’s one for the future. The rest, were free. Keane, Cole and Downing I believe would also just be coming on wages. Short term of course.
