Middlesbrough opened their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 victory against Portuguese second division side Farense on the Algarve.
Mustapha Carayol scored their winner when collecting Andy Halliday’s through pass midway through the second-half.
Emmanuel Ledesma and Lukas Jutkiewicz had both seen early efforts blocked while goalkeeper Jayson Leutweiler was only forced into a couple of routine collections at the other end.
His replacement Jason Steele then made a great point-blank stop following the break and after Christian Burgess had already fired straight at the keeper.
Boro’s Grant Leadbitter also saw a free-kick parried while Scott McDonald was only denied by an offside flag after helping in a cross from Carayol, who finally made a 65th minute breakthrough before Marvin Emnes sent a later opportunity wide.
