Experienced midfielder Dean Whitehead is set to complete a move to Middlesbrough over the weekend.

The 31-year-old was expected to train with his new Boro team-mates at Rockliffe Park on Monday. He officially becomes a free agent on 1st July following his release from Premier League Stoke City.

Whitehead already has more than five hundred senior appearances to his credit after originally beginning his career at Oxford United.

He would therefore once again team up with his former Sunderland midfield colleague Grant Leadbitter at the Riverside.

Boro have so far recruited Hungarian international midfielder Jozsef Varga on a season-long loan from Debrecen since the end of last season.
