Former England winger Kieron Dyer is set to sign for Middlesbrough on a pay-as-you-play basis within the next forty-eight hours.

The injury-hit 34-year-old has managed only 47 appearances over the course of the last five-and-a-half seasons and was released by Premier League strugglers Queens Park Rangers only last week.

But Boro boss Tony Mowbray has already held talks with the former Newcastle United and West Ham United forward who actually scored on his final QPR appearance against West Bromwich Albion earlier this month.

“Nothing is finalised yet, there’s no pen put to paper, but it could be exciting for us,” Mowbray told the Northern Echo. “On his good day, he can change games through his speed, his dribbling ability, releasing the ball at the right time and his power.

“I think Dyer playing in the Championship will be very different to Dyer playing for QPR in the Premier League,” he continued. “I haven’t signed him to play at right-back, although there might be a scenario where we need him to do a job there for us, I see him playing further up the pitch, playing between the lines.”
