Boro so close but vital weekend still ahead

|

Middlesbrough have two more games remaining to confirm an end of season play-off place following their terrific weekend victory at Derby County.

Goals from midfielder Mo Besic and recalled striker Britt Assombalonga were enough despite an injury-time penalty from ex-Boro marksman David Nugent.

“It was a smashing performance,” manager Tony Pulis told BBC Sport. “We have to be a little more clinical but I thought we played really well today. I can’t give the players any more praise because Derby gave us a proper game.”

Having also faced fellow promotion hopefuls Bristol City and Sheffield United in recentĀ games, Boro next host the side immediately below them in the table, Millwall.

The South London club conceded ground on Friday evening when crashing 3-0 at home to capital rivals Fulham.

Boro have a three-point cushion over them at present and are now four ahead of Derby, in seventh, who still have a single game in hand.

Therefore four points from their last couple of games will definitely be enough for the Teessiders – visitors to Ipswich Town on the final weekend.
