Middlesbrough will again try to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow after their opening £5m offer was refused.

Boro have so far added Norwich City playmaker Jonny Howson and Derby County full-back Cyrus Christie to their ranks following relegation last season.

Manager Garry Monk wants to bring in the 26-year-old former Nottingham Forest shot-stopper, reports the Northern Echo, who is currently available from St James’ Park. However, the Teessiders’ recent bid apparently included several clauses reducing their initial payment.

Monk turned to Darlow after unsuccessful earlier approaches for Keiren Westwood and Sam Johnstone – and ahead of Leeds United’s Robert Green.
