New manager Tony Pulis admitted he was pleased Middlesbrough were still in the game after forty-five minutes at Preston North End.

The visitors trailed 2-1 at the interval but eventually rallied to emerge as 3-2 victors following Spanish defender Daniel Ayala scoring either side of midfielder Jonny Howson.

That leaves them currently in eighth place and just a couple of points outside the play-offs ahead of switching focus to the FA Cup this weekend.

“I was pleased to come in 2-1 down at half-time,” Pulis told BBC Sport. “I thought Preston were really very good first half, and we sat off them and allowed them to play.

“We showed a lot of character second half which was very encouraging,” he added. “I don’t know the players that well so it will take me a while to know what I have got and what I haven’t got. I will be doing my best to get this club back into the Premier League as soon as possible.”
