Middlesbrough succumbed to a solitary first-half strike from Crystal Palace’s Patrick van Aanholt at Selhurst Park.

The Dutchman drove in a low winner with just over half-an-hour played for his first goal since completing a January move.

Wilfried Zaha struck across the target from a narrow angle as the home side began strongly while Christian Benteke headed straight at goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

Marten de Roon replied over the crossbar at the other end before van Aanholt drilled through a crowded area when the visitors only partially cleared.

Boro responded with a change at the start of the second-half with Rudy Gestede replacing Alvaro Negredo.

However, their opponents were still the busier outfit and Benteke was only narrowly missing; although Gaston Ramirez’s twenty-yard free-kick was saved by Welsh goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

Both Zaha and Benteke saw further attempts for the hosts while defensive pair Ben Gibson and Fabio proved wayward as their visitors chased a late equaliser.
