Middlesbrough won’t have Birmingham City defender Ryan Shotton within their ranks until they find a suitable replacement despite already agreeing a fee.

The 28-year-old former Derby County and Stoke City centre-back made his first appearance of the season for the Blues as a substitute during their midweek scoreless draw with Bolton Wanderers.

“We have agreed terms with Middlesbrough,” City manager Harry Redknapp told BBC Sport. “But he will not be leaving until we have a replacement as we should have four central defenders on the books.

“We now have five players out injured. And we go to Burton with Ryan Shotton’s wife expecting a baby,” he added. “We could have only one [available] centre-half on our books, which is not a good position to be in at this stage of the season.”
