Defender Ben Gibson admitted he expected to miss out on the England squad following relegation with Middlesbrough.
Having initially been called into the national squad for the first time in March, the highly-rated 24-year-old has been overlooked since dropping back into the Championship at the end of last season.
“Everyone knows how football works,” Gibson told SkySports. “I knew it was going to be difficult once I decided to stay at Middlesbrough in the Championship and that’s the way it has been.
“I’m not focusing on that,” he added. “I’m focusing on achieving with Middlesbrough, getting back up that table to where we belong.”
