Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate aims to go into management once his playing career finishes.

The 33-year-old former Real Madrid centre-back has struggled with injuries since returning to the Riverside and was restricted to only 25 appearances last season.

“I’ve done OK in my career, I could have done a lot better,” Woodgate told Boro’s official website. “Football is the only thing I know. Hopefully one day I would like to be a coach or a manager. I want to be a manager and to get inside players’ minds.

“Every manager I have played for has left an impression, good and bad,” he added. “I have learned from every one of them, but you go in as your own person and do it your own way.”

Woodgate also had spells at Leeds United and Newcastle United while earning himself eight full international caps for England.
