Middlesbrough full-back Justin Hoyte believes he is finally beginning to win over his critics at the Riverside.

The 27-year-old former Arsenal defender who re-signed for the club in the summer netted a terrific opener in the latest victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday evening.

“I think I am winning the critics over now,” Hoyte told the Evening Gazette. “I know some people in the crowd didn’t like me and they made that known and yes, you hear it yourself or you get told about it or they say things on twitter or whatever, but you can’t let it get to you. I didn’t let it affect my game at all.

“All you can do is perform the best you can,” he promised. “If I am doing that and if the team is playing well and winning then it’s job done and I am not too bothered if some people are unhappy.”

London-born Hoyte is rapidly closing in on 150 games for the Teessiders since joining them in a £3m deal from the Gunners just over four years ago.
