Midfielder Grant Leadbitter believes Middlesbrough can use their terrible mid-season slump to really kick-on next term.

Boro took just a dozen points following the turn of the year to eventually finish in sixteenth place in the Championship – their lowest league placing in more than two decades.

“The last three months has hurt me,” Leabitter admitted to the Evening Gazette. “It’s hurt the players, it’s hurt the manager, it’s hurt everyone at the club.

“It hurts – but it’s got to drive you on,” he continued. “It’s got to make you want to work harder to be a better player, a stronger player, as an individual and as part of a stronger team.”

Leadbitter, 27, was recently named as the Official Supporters’ Club Player of the Year after making 47 appearances last term.
