Chelsea defender Kenneth Omeruo wants to fight for a regular start next season following his recent loan spell at Middlesbrough.

The 20-year-old Nigerian international recently agreed a new deal at Stamford Bridge and is currently preparing for the World Cup.

Both Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and his Boro counterpart Aitor Karanka remain impressed by his progress and there could be an opening in West London next term – with David Luiz set to depart for Paris-Saint Germain.

“They just gave me good feedback and they want me next season,” Omeruo told London24. “We’re going to see how it goes after the World Cup. I hope to get a chance next year. I didn’t speak to the manager [after signing a new deal] as I was in the Nigeria World Cup camp.”

Omeruo made fourteen appearances for the Teessiders following his arrival at the Riverside in January.
