Manager Tony Mowbray reckons Middlesbrough must match the ambition of the emerging George Friend if they want to hold onto him.
Mowbray believes that the former Doncaster Rovers defender is destined for the Premier League at some stage of his career. Naturally enough, the Boro chief wants that to be with the Teessiders.
“He’s very educated yet he wants to learn, he wants to get better, he’s here to get better,” Mowbray told the Evening Gazette. “George Friend is one of those footballers that we have to match his ambition as we move forward. We have to try and get to the Premier League because I have no doubt he will make it himself one day.”
Boro paid only £100,000 for his services over the summer and the 25-year-old is already appearing an established fixture at the Riverside.
