Middlesbrough went out of the League Cup after Fulham came from behind for a 2-1 extra-time victory at Craven Cottage.

Boro struck early when David Nugent headed in a cross from debutant Brazilian full-back Fabio, who though almost immediately limped out of the action.

That was cancelled out as Julien de Sart deflected Scott Malone’s 54th minute effort into his own net.

With no further goals in normal time the contest moved into an added half-hour – and Lasse Vigen Christensen eventually claimed the winner from Malone’s low cross.

Lightening and rain greeted the kick-off but the visitors wasted little time going in front, newcomer Fabio delivering from the left for Nugent to head in from six-yards.

Fulham’s response had Cauley Woodrow forcing Brad Guzan into action while his colleagues also had a couple of further attempts charged down.

The Championship side continued to push after the break and were rewarded when de Sart turned past his own goalkeeper.

Emilio Nsue Lopez brought an extended save from Jesse Joronen at the other end before Stewart Downing’s effort was deflected behind.

Downing later curled a free-kick over from the edge of the area and goalscorer Nugent clipped the top of the crossbar with a stoppage-time header.

Home forward Sanchez Ruiz struck directly at goalkeeper Guzan into extra-time and substitute Matt Smith also headed narrowly over, while Ben Gibson had to clear off the line from Sean Kavanagh.

Boro’s De Sart was too high in reply before, with penalties appearing increasingly likely, Christensen finally slotted in a close-range winner with just seven minutes remaining.
