Goalkeeper Jason Steele began his Middlesbrough comeback in an Under-21 Premier League meeting with Aston Villa at the Riverside on Monday evening.
The Teessiders went down to a 2-0 loss in front of head coach Aitor Karanka and his newly-appointed assistant Craig Hignett.
Steele was beaten by a close-range header from Graham Burke just beyond the half-hour before Janoi Donacien powered in another following the break.
The former England Under-21 international was left out of the weekend defeat to Sheffield Wednesday after recent loan signing Tomas Mejias started with Dimi Konstantopoulos on the bench.
