Middlesbrough went down to a 1-0 defeat to Fulham as Oliver Norwood converted a late injury-time penalty at the Riverside.

That followed an adjudged trip on him by Grant Leadbitter, and was only moments after home substitute Britt Assombalonga struck the crossbar.

Boro had earlier seen claims for a penalty ignored following a challenge on Martin Braithwaite by former defender Tomas Kalas.

But it was Rudy Gestede unable to take advantage of an early loose back-pass as goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli made the clearance. Gestede also dragged a later opportunity wide after being released through the middle.

The visitors improved following the interval, until Braithwaite appeared to be pushed inside the area – but no favourable decision resulted.

Braithwaite next located only the side-netting, while Ryan Sessegnon was threatening before goalkeeper Darren Randolph claimed possession at the opposite end.

However, Assombalonga, who had earlier replaced Gestede, hoisted onto the crossbar and then sent the rebound wide.

And moments later on loan Norwood went down inside the other area and picked himself up to claim a stoppage-time winner from the penalty spot.
