Middlesbrough crashed to a 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool as Adam Lallana scored twice at the Riverside.

Lallana headed in Nathaniel Clyne’s cross around the half-hour mark and then delivered for Divock Origi to double the advantage after the break.

The England forward then added another midway through the second period as the visitors romped to their biggest away win of the season.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had earlier recalled goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in place of Loris Karius – and he saved a Calum Chambers header from Adam Forshaw’s free-kick.

But the returning Belgian remained largely untroubled and clear opportunities were in decidedly short supply, until Lallana finished off a decent move when heading in Clyne’s cross at close-range.

Viktor Fischer had an immediate reply turned aside by Mignolet while Forshaw’s effort was also deflected behind; although Sadio Mane struck an upright at the other end.

Ex-Southampton forward Mane also went close following the break as the visitors continued to impress, and they were rewarded with another well-fashioned goal when Origi turned in Lallana’s cross.

And the roles were soon reversed for Lallana to continue an outstanding display and add his second of the evening – and in the process confirm a regulation victory.
