Middlesbrough went down to a single-goal defeat to Norwich City at the Riverside.

The Teessiders dominated the action for long periods but still lost out to James Maddison’s early first-half winner.

That arrived on thirteen minutes as Dael Fry was caught in possession and Marley Watkins allowed Maddison to curl home in style.

Boro pressed on for an equaliser and Britt Assombalonga headed back Marvin Johnson’s cross, although Darren Randolph was turning away from Cameron Jerome after the break.

His opposite number Angus Gunn collected a firm drive from the returning Adama Traore and was then dealing with another Assombalonga header.

Record buy Assombalonga nodded again towards the keeper, who also denied a late Lewis Baker free-kick alongside a couple of unsuccessful penalty shouts.
