Middlesbrough struck three times inside an hour to defeat League One side Scunthorpe United in the EFL Cup second round at the Riverside.

Brazilian defender Fabio earned them a seventeenth minute lead improved upon by on loan midfielder Lewis Baker before the break. Fellow newcomer Ashley Fletcher then added another to ensure a comfortable victory.

Josh Morris had lifted an early opportunity over for the visitors, until Adama Traore crossed for Fabio to head the opening goal at the far post.

The Teessiders claimed another on the half-hour mark with Grant Leadbitter allowing Chelsea youngster Baker to despatch into the corner from the edge of the area.

Self-confessed Boro fan Neal Bishop next headed wide for the visitors early in the second-half, although it was their opponents then breaking for Marcus Tavernier to set-up a third goal for Fletcher.

Substitute Stewart Downing later curled narrowly off-target while both Baker and Traore also went close to further reward.
