Middlesbrough have an immediate opportunity to get back to winning ways when entertaining struggling Birmingham City this evening (kick-off 7.45pm).

The Teessiders’ recent three-match victory sequence was ended following their weekend 2-1 defeat at manager Garry Monk’s former club Leeds United.

Boro right-back Cyrus Christie missed that game through suspension but is now free to return, while striker Rudy Gestede [thigh] continues to make progress and could make the bench.

Birmingham have managed just a single-point on their travels this season, although their weekend 1-0 home victory against Nottingham Forest was enough to lift them out of the relegation zone.

However, Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Gleeson suffered a thigh injury and had to be replaced, while fellow schemer Craig Gardner was already unavailable due to a calf problem.

Otherwise, Maxime Colin, Isaac Vassell, David Stockdale and Carl Jenkinson remain sidelined.
