Otherwise, there are doubts over midfielder Grant Leadbitter due to a hamstring injury.
Meanwhile, striker Rudy Gestede [ankle] has already been sidelined for the rest of the season, with Brazilian full-back Fabio da Silva [thigh] similarly unavailable.
Former Boro midfielder Adam Forshaw was expected to return for the visitors having missed out against Brentford after his wife went into labour.
There could also be recalls for Pablo Hernandez [groin] and Kemar Roofe [knock].
