Manager Garry Monk felt it was a useful exercise following Middlesbrough’s opening pre-season fixture in Portugal.

The Teessiders were held to a scoreless draw by League One side Oxford United in his first game in charge. Boro sent out a different eleven in both halves.

Newcomers Jonny Howson and Cyrus Christie were both given debuts, while Adama Traore, Dael Fry, Cristhian Stuani and Patrick Bamford all went close – and Gaston Ramirez also had strong penalty claims denied.

“It was physically tough as you’d expect, but was a great chance to blow the cobwebs off,” Monk told Boro’s official website. “The conditions would always play a big factor.

“We’re always trying to work on things and we saw some good things and some things to work on,” he added. “Most importantly it was a good workout.”
