More problems for Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray after Birmingham City handed them a third successive defeat following a 1-0 victory at the Riverside.

Serbian striker Nikola Zigic claimed the vital goal with just nine minutes remaining to leave Boro still in ninth place in the table but now five points adrift of the play-offs.

“We are making reaching the play-offs difficult for ourselves,” Mowbray admitted to BBC Sport. “We understand we need to win games to give ourselves a chance and that now we have one less game to do that.

“But it was a fine margin game. It could have gone either way but unfortunately it is another one that fell the wrong side of the line for us,” he added. “We asked questions of them and had our chances to score but we never took them.”
