Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray has attributed the welcome rise of fortunes at the Riverside to the spirit within his current group of players.

In-form Boro are only separated from the top of the table by goal-difference following an excellent sequence of results over the past few weeks.

Their determination was once again in evidence at the weekend when eventually prevailing 4-1 at Charlton Athletic despite never being at their best.

“They have been immense this year,” Mowbray told the Evening Gazette. “The spirit in the group is night and day compared to previous months and years in my tenure here.

“They understand that there will be difficult periods in games but they stick together and that goes a long, long way to turning a corner in games where you are not playing particularly well and end up getting results because the players are pulling together.”
