Mowbray happy at change of fortune

Manager Tony Mowbray was understandably delighted at Middlesbrough’s fightback but felt opponents Watford were probably unfortunate to be reduced to ten-men late in the first-half.

Marvin Emnes and substitute Scott McDonald were both on target for the visitors after the shock of Troy Deeney giving their opponents an instant lead following a badly misplaced backpass from Andre Bikey inside the opening thirty seconds.

However, Boro’s cause was certainly aided when Watford’s on loan Czech striker Matej Vydra was sent-off for a challenge on Nicky Bailey just before half-time.

“The sending off probably helped but we got there in the end,” Mowbray told Boro’s official website. “The sun was very low but I didn’t see a red card, me. I was as surprised as anyone when I saw the boy walking over to the dugout.

“We’ve played a lot better than that and got nothing but we’ve lost points in the last week to two goals that in my opinion were offside, so we’ll take the three points and move on.”

Those points were ultimately achieved when out-of-favour striker McDonald snatched the winner after coming off the bench to make his first appearance since April.

“Scott has shown over the last few weeks that he can buy into what we’re trying to do and be a part of the squad,” Mowbray added. “He’s got a lot of good players to compete with and the test for Scott is when he’s taken off or doesn’t even make the bench.”
