Tony Mowbray has been sacked as manager of Middlesbrough and leaves the club with immediate effect. His assistant Mark Venus is placed in charge of team affairs until further notice.

Boro have won only twice this season and were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by League Two’s bottom club Accrington Stanley in August.

The Teessiders are currently sixteenth in the Championship, which is exactly where they finished last term despite being third at the turn of the year. At the weekend they lost 3-2 at bottom club Barnsley, leaving them a full ten points short of the top six.

Mowbray, 49, has been in charge for almost three years after previously skippering the club he supported as a youngster with great distinction.

He succeeded current Scotland boss Gordon Strachan in the role in October 2010, and led them to a mid-table finish before only narrowly missing out on the play-offs in his first full season in charge.
