Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray is hoping for an early goal to help settle his own side in their FA Cup third round meeting with non-league Hastings United at the Riverside this weekend.

Boro face the lowest-ranked remaining team in the competition who have already progressed through six rounds to get this far, including beating fellow non-leaguers Harrogate Town on penalties in their latest tie last month.

“Let’s hope we can score early and enjoy the day,” Mowbray told BBC Tees. “We can’t guarantee a result, so we hope when the chances come they get put away and we don’t rue missed chances.

“The last thing we want is for it to get late into the game, with it 0-0 against a lower division team and they get a free-kick or a corner,” he added. “I’m expecting a tough game and a team that goes every yard required to give themselves a chance.”
