New Middlesbrough signing Dean Whitehead is already targeting a hat-trick of title wins in the Championship.

The 31-year-old has joined the Teessiders following four years and more than a hundred games in the Premiership with Stoke City.

But prior to that the one-time Oxford United midfielder twice tasted title success with Sunderland during his only two years of appearing in the second tier of the professional game.

“The last two occasions I have been in this league – the only two – have been brilliant,” Whitehead told the Northern Echo. “We have won the league twice. I have a good record in the Championship, so hopefully I can make it a third.

“It’s a tough league but hopefully I can bring a bit of experience and get a bit more out of the lads,” he continued. “If we can get this club back to where it belongs in the Premier League then it would be as good as anything I’ve done so far.”
