Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray said there were no excuses following their comprehensive 4-0 defeat at Ipswich Town.

Home defender Tommy Smith scored twice and David McGoldrick and Aaron Mclean added to it on a miserable return to Portman Road for the disappointed supremo.

“There are no excuses,” Mowbray admitted to Boro’s official website. “It was one of those days and I feel for the supporters who made the journey – I’m very disappointed for them.

“We have to dig deep and stay together and realise how tough it’s going to be,” he added. “I’ve said to the players in there that this week we’re looking for character and individuals who want to bounce back and put it right.”

Boro remain in sixth position in the table as a result of a fourth successive league defeat but are now nine points off an automatic promotion place.
