Striker Rudy Gestede was sent-off as ten-man Middlesbrough went down to a 1-0 defeat to Norwich City at Carrow Road.

The 29-year-old received his marching orders just before the half-hour for a challenge on Grant Hanley, having already been cautioned a few minutes earlier.

Home midfielder Tom Trybull then struck a winner from distance immediately prior to the break as the visitors slipped to ninth in the table.

Boro had earlier lined up with a trio of new signings on the bench, although it was Adama Traore narrowly wide from the edge of the area and Patrick Bamford also firing across goal.

However, the dismissal of Gestede was followed by James Maddison seeing a deflected effort taken by Darren Randolph; that ahead of Trybull suddenly locating the bottom corner from around twenty-yards.

Grant Leadbitter and Stewart Downing were both wide either side of the interval before Maddison was only inches away from adding a second for the home side.

Nelson Oliveira later called Randolph into action and substitute Onel Hernandez also struck wide on the break as they again threatened to extend their advantage.
