Another Pompey player coming to the Riverside?

The Daily Mail has this morning reported that Boro are close to agreeing a £2m deal with Portsmouth to bring Sean Davis to the club. He is a tough, strong tackling, box-to-box midfielder who can keep and pass the ball well.

28 year old Davis has reportedly been a long-term target for Boro, both Gareth Southgate and former Boro boss Steve McClaren apparent admirers, and if he was to be brought in would beef up the central midfield position. The former England under 21 international is an old team-mate of current Boro player Gary O`Neil as they both played together at Pompey – they had that long running bet of who would score first, growing their hair continuously until one did.

Davis started his career at Fulham, where he helped them rise from League 2 football up to the Premier League and with 155 appearances under his belt he then handed in a transfer request stating he wanted to move to a more ambitious club. A transfer to Spurs came in the summer of 2004 but he never really settled in, only making 15 appearances in his 18 month spell with the club. He moved onto Pompey in January 2006, helping the club fight off relegation, and has so far made 70 appearances for the South Coast club but only scored 1 goal.

After scoring only 15 goals in 240 league games is he the sort of player Boro need? Would he be coming in as another Boateng or would Southgate be looking for him to make bursting runs forward?

We shall have to wait and see what happens but if Boateng is to go then I would have Davis in the squad.
