Scott McDonald is capable of scoring the kind of goals that nobody else in the current squad can produce, according to Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray.

The Australian international has already netted four times in five games since returning to favour at the beginning of last month.

He began at Watford and followed it up with both goals against Bolton Wanderers before grabbing a midweek winner to account for neighbours Sunderland in the Capital One Cup. Boro have still never failed to win this season whilst McDonald has been on the pitch.

“We have lots of competition, but Scott is probably a different type of goalscorer,” Mowbray told the Northern Echo. “The goals he’s scored over the last week, I’m not sure that anyone else in our squad would score those type of goals.

“All three of his goals have been in and around the six-yard box because he knows where to run,” he added. “He knows where the ball is going to drop and he’s sharp around the box. I think every team needs those type of goals.”
