Striker Patrick Bamford believes Middlesbrough already have a strong enough squad to mount a sustained challenge on the Championship.

New manager Garry Monk will certainly work on strengthening at the Riverside over the summer, but the former Chelsea forward is still very optimistic despite eventual relegation and seriously limited opportunities for himself last term.

“We’ve got a strong core here,” Bamford told Boro’s official website. “The majority of the players here know what it’s like to be in the Championship and what it takes to get out of it.

“I think that sets us in good stead and on a personal note I’m excited,” he added. “I just want a season of playing now. When I play I know what I can do, so it’s just about making sure I’m always in the team.”
