Middlesbrough striker Scott McDonald has told his own colleagues to “take a long, hard look at themselves” ahead of next season.

That follows his side continuing their recent slide down the table despite managing a late fightback against Charlton Athletic at the weekend.

Boro finally wrap-up their campaign on Saturday against a Sheffield Wednesday outfit still needing points to avoid the drop, although it is their latest visitors currently demonstrating more the relegation form with just three of their last nineteen league games producing a victory.

“We all have to take a long, hard look at ourselves and ask what we can do better than what we’ve done in the second half of the season,” McDonald told the Northern Echo. “We want to put this behind us now and click our fingers and be ready for the start of next season.

“We can only really assess how the future looks at the start of next season,” he continued. “But everyone has to come back ready and fully fit, if not even fitter than they’ve been this year. We have to be better in every aspect.”
