Striker Scott McDonald’s future still remain unclear at Middlesbrough.

The Australian international currently has a year remaining at the Riverside but manager Tony Mowbray would ideally prefer to move him out in order to free his considerable wages.

However, Mowbray remains certain the 29-year-old will always give his absolute best if still with the club this coming season, despite unsuccessful discussions so far over a final settlement.

“The next few weeks will dictate [whether he goes],” Mowbray told the Northern Echo. “Salaries from a different era is a fair assessment of it really. Scott understands that, we understand that.

“To move forward as we would like, we could probably use Scott’s money in different ways,” he continued. “While he is here, I have to commend him because he has worked very hard.”

McDonald scored thirteen goals in 35 games for the Teessiders last season.
