Recalled Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate was sent-off during a 2-1 defeat as Bolton Wanderers continue to strengthen their own claims for a play-off place.

Chris Eagles gave the home side the lead early in the second-half but Kieron Dyer quickly levelled. However, Woodgate immediately conceded a penalty converted by Marvin Sordell before then being dismissed for a second bookable offence.

Boro goalkeeper Jason Steele was earlier forced into making an early save from Craig Davies before also superbly denying Mohamed Medo from 25-yards.

His opposite number Adam Bogden in turn allowed a Scott McDonald shot to escape his grasp but there were no available takers. The Australian striker also headed a Dyer delivery across the face of goal.

Darren Pratley fired a 25-yard attempt wide in reply while Boro skipper Rhys Williams saw a low volley blocked and Mustapha Caryol a late first-half effort ruled out by an assistant’s raised flag.

Carayol had already forced a stop from home keeper Bogdan before Eagles’ cross towards the other end drifted over Steele and into the net for the lead.

But when the lively Carayol chased down the left and supplied for Dyer to complete a six-yard header the visitors were back level.

However. that was to last just another three minutes as Woodgate was ruled to have fouled Chung-Yong Lee inside the area and Sordell despatched his penalty.

Woodgate was cautioned for that and then when the ex-Real Madrid stopper tugged back Sordell moments later, the shade of the card turned from yellow to red.

Ten-man Boro tried to come back again but were unable to respond as their season continues to fizzle out towards its disappointing conclusion.
