Former England international Stewart Downing hopes Middlesbrough can get their promotion challenge back on track this weekend.

The Teessiders have lost to Norwich City and drawn with Brentford in their previous two home games and are currently nine points short of latest visitors Cardiff City.

“The last couple of home games weren’t very good, we know that,” Downing admitted to The Northern Echo. “I think if you look at the whole season you can see what the manager is trying to do, you can see what the team is trying to do. I think it just takes time.

“This league has got a lot stronger in the last two years,” he added. “I think owners are throwing around that little bit more to try to get out of the league. There are some big teams in this league, but I am confident we can do well.”
