Boro snatch late point

Substitute Marvin Emnes scored a late equaliser to rescue a point for Middlesbrough at home to Blackpool.

The Dutchman converted from an Albert Adomah cross deep into added time to cancel out Chris Basham’s 83rd minute opener.

Boro went into the game without first-choice goalkeeper Jason Steele due to an ankle injury. He was replaced by Jayson Leutwiler with latest signing Dimitrios Konstantopoulos on the bench.

Mustapha Carayol offered some early promise for the home side but his finish failed to match the approach work. He also drilled another effort across goal.

Blackpool striker Steve Davies forced Leutwiler into action from the edge of the area while recent signing Neal Bishop almost opened the scoring against his boyhood favourites until Dean Whitehead cleared.

The action continued to be tight following the break, although visiting keeper Matt Gilks was tested when turning away a teasing Adomah cross. He also delivered for Lukas Jutkiewicz to fire wide.

But the Seasiders went in front when Rhys Williams was penalised on the edge of his own area and Barry Ferguson’s miscued 83rd free-kick fell for Basham to open the scoring.

That appeared to suggest a third straight home defeat for Boro this season, at least until Emnes seized upon Gilks’ punched clearance to claim a dramatic injury-time equaliser.
